this method should solve the problem for good. Even for the VW guys

The heater part of the unit sits in the top section of the housing so by removing the heater core and cutting that section out of the housing then fabricate a new top with outlets for the duct work to attach to, the final height of the unit would only be around 4 1/4"(107.95mm). It should clear everything under the dash(I think). I don't have the stock dash in the car to check clearances.

For a compressor get a 12v compressor. No need to bolt one up to the engine so no HP is lost running the AC in the car

A thermostat would have to be made or bought to regulate how cold it will get(to turn the system on and off)

Now there should be no issues with putting AC in this car

I've been paying around $50 for these units in the wrecking yards. I don't know the price range for the 12v compressors

Keep in mind I still haven't got my system up and running so I don't know how well this unit works but if its in a full size Mercedes it should do well in our cars I figure

I looked into those 12v compressors years ago. I have yet to find a thread other than an EV forum where one has been used "successfully". From what I've read, and I'm certainly no expert, the "average" small car (say, Mini Cooper) takes around 15,000BTU's to cool efficiently. Most of the 12v systems max out at 5-6K BTU, which would not even put a dent in a car that's been sitting in the sun with the canopy closed. Add a second battery for a 24v feed, and things change a little bit..

Just regurgitating what I've found in the past, Brett.. not trying to start an argument on what will or won't work. For the money, an engine mounted compressor will always outperform an electric.

Hard to argue with you when your right.

My short search for specs for a cars AC compressor came up with 12,000-18,000BTU is required for a cars AC system.

I find it interesting that the sellers of the 12v compressors try to pass it off for a replacement or substitute.

Well I guess then an engine mounted compressor is the route to go, but at least putting AC in the car just got easier.

One other thing to mention is you'll need to get an expansion valve for the system. Mercedes uses a refrigerant shut-off valve to regulate the high and low pressure sides of the system.

I was thinking of pulling one of these shut-off valves until I saw the size of one.
