Yeah, I think you can do that, though I haven't tried it myself. Would make sense and save a step!

The end of the cam that drives the oil pump. Early cams are dish (I think), flat cams have a slot like a screwdriver slot that drives the oil pump. Late oil pumps won't fit early cams.

70 and earlier are flat cams:
it lives but.........-70-back-vw-cam.jpg
71 and later are dished cams:
it lives but.........-71-up-vw-cam.jpg

I think most aftermarket rebuilders use the dish cam.
