Camber Adjustment on IRS
 
I lowered my car today to the height I like (sitting about 1/2" from top of untrimmed bump stop) and getting almost 3 deg negative camber at best adjustment. I was under impression that negative camber issue for lowered VW based cars is mainly related to swing axle suspension but apparently it's not the case. What is the solution. I''ve seen some reference to using Porsche 924 or 944 swing arms with spring plates as a solution since they come with camber adjustment but I am not sure which exact year model would just bolt up. I've also looked at drop spring plates but those only address torsion preload and suspension travel range but do not address camber issues. Any recommendations?

If memory serves, there is no camber adjustment for the rear. That's why all the cool kids with lowered vintage VW's look like the cars are broken in the back. There is a way to correct that, but it involves making custom trailing arms. Some circle track runners in the past have done that, but then that creates other problems.

Other then tire wear, what problems or concerns do you have about lowering?

Yes the stub axles and bearing may have unusual load on them, but I don't see that as a problem.

The swing axle cars only suffer from a lack of lubrication to the bearings and tire wear as far as I know.

I think as Rick rightly pointed out it just looks wrong, I have never liked the tucked in look of any car where the wheels look like they are trying to form a pyramid shape as so many extreme lowered cars do.

Just my 2 cents worth :D

Personally I don't have any issues with lowering, especially on our cars. To get the right stance sometimes you have to. What I hate is what David posted... and lots of those cars running around here. Extreme lowering will wear the universals at a much faster rate, and like you mentioned on swingaxles you'll run the bearings dry.

But... that's the problem with old Beetles - they were never designed to do what the kit crowd asks them to do. To get the right look in the rear without camber issues, generally larger tires are involved to fill the space. Personally, I like the steamroller look in the back. Some owners want the low profile supercar look.. and that's ok... as long as one recognizes the limits of a 70 year old design.

I know that performance wise it's good to have a little negative camber but looks wise it's not my cup of tea. I am surprised that I couldn't find any vendors that sell trailing arms for lowered VW's. Seems like it's the only proper way to fix the camber issue and should be a fairly popular item, but I couldn't find any. I've read about others using Porsche 944 trailing arms and spring plates (as they have build in camber adjustment via eccentric bolt) but couldn't find any detailed information.

944 arms are a common swap. They do pretty much bolt right in. Check on Samba for that particular information in the performance section. Of course, then you're running Porsche pattern on the rear and VW in the front unless you change rotors in the front.
