ENGINE OPTION LIST FOR VW & PORSCHE TRANSAXLES

Engine weights are those taken at KEP, less flywheel, clutch and options. Lengths are measured from adapter face to front pulley. Information is taken from available engines only, and will vary. For comparison, a 1600 VW weighs 215 lbs with heater boxes; 180 lbs if stripped for a sandrail, and is 141/2" long.

Mazda Rotary

Ref. #

2640 Mazda 13B twin turbo & 3 rotor 20B

2670 Mazda RX8

2670 Mazda '74 and newer 12A & 13B & RX8. Popular because of its small size, power and smoothness, but is short on bottom end torque. Inefficient design requires more fuel, a larger radiator, and an oil cooler. The exhaust is hotter and louder than piston engines. 13B RX-7 engines are computer controlled. If your engine came from a manual shift, you will need the proper automatic counterweight from your Mazda dealer or from KEP. A 6 volt starter run on 12 volts is recommended for efficient starting so specify 6 or 12 volt flywheel in kit. 90 to 160 HP or 255 HP turbo.

For what it's worth, I'm running a Pontiac Fiero GT V6. I put together this list at one point for a different site:

2.0L 911 - 405 lbs
2.2L 911 - 380-405 lbs (magnesium case dropped weight)
POLO - 286 lbs (Polo is a flat 4 using modern 911 parts)
912 - 212 lbs - 240 lbs
Subaru - 264 lbs? (from Pelican, but poster questioned it)
914 - 311 lbs? (from questionable chart)
Raby?
Pontiac 2.8 liter V6- 345-376 lb. (for point of reference, with all extras)
VW Type 1 250-265 lbs with flywheel, muffler, carbs and all sheetmetal, dry.
