Hybrid retrofitting of older cars

Ive been digging up some info on hybrid retrofitting of older cars.
Apparently a couple colleges are working on a way to replace your standard braking components underneath the wheels to help give you some of the economy of a hybrid car. They are using some type of high output pancake electric motors.

Now of course playin gthe devils advocate here. Economy is fine, however, if you could select modes this would be better. Say ECO, Normal, and Sport.

Sport would be a bit of a hack on the idea, and that would be adding the torque of the electric motors ontop of the I.C.E. (Internal Combustion Engine). This is what the McLaren P1 does, and why it gets 30mpg one minute, and nearly breaks your neck the next.

I'm waiting for someone here to take a wrecked Tesla and rework the platform to fit under a shell. It is, after all, only a platform much like the Beetle. How hard can it be *laugh* Brett??*hee-hee-hee*

Little short against 94.5" VW, but totally hypothetical anyway, there are some good projects with EV Novas, Stirlings and SSs though.
