Steering column mounting

Having problem Mounting a steering column. What is the best steering column to mount and how is it supported? My Steerling is on a VW Chasis. billy.massengill@us.army.mil any help would be appreciated. Found the vehicle in Indianna without engine an tranny, Had an untitled VW Bug with an good engine an transmission that I put in it. I think that was the easy part. Now I am trying to make everything safe an operational before starting the body work, which is alot.

Hi Billy,

What is the best steering column? The best one is a fully functional free one! *laugh* If you can't find one of those then any GM Column is probably a good idea because there are a lot of wiring diagrams available online. I have a column from a 97 Firebird in mine. If you keep the stock Sterling dash you will have to fabricate a mounting bracket that fits and holds the column securely. I build a custom dash around the column I have with a steel brace that spans the width of the cockpit.

So... I hope you are good and comfortable with welding and fiberglass work.

This came from the assy manual. Maybe it will help. The column then bolts to the plate. Can you tell what manual it came from??

:D I won't tell, but the location is a dead giveaway. For my GM column, I was able to use an exhaust hanger with a backing plate through the dash. Quick and easy and allowed a little bit of adjustment.
